Final Poll Returns For The Eastern Maori Electorate
Figures for the Eastern Maori electorate in the recent national poll on gaming and liquor issues have been completed, the compilation having been made from the returns of 301 polling places, with a number of absent votes and postal votes also taken into account. The official count of votes has given the following results:— Off-Course Betting: For, 6604; against, 1695; informal 215. Majority for the proposal, 4909. Licensing Issue: For 6 o’clock closing, 5102; for 10 o’clock closing, 2973; informal 139. Majority for 6 o’clock closing, 2129. . Included in the Eastern Maori electorate are many isolated settlements and work camps where fairly substantial votes for late closing of hotel bars were recorded. In all the main settlements throughout the Gisborne, East Coast and Bay of Plenty areas, however, the Maori voters were solid against an extension of hotel hours into late in the evening.
