Speed Restrictions To Be Imposed On Edgecumbe Bridge

Deep concern at the state of the TSdgecumbe bridge and the way it was being treated by some who used it was expressed by members of the Whakatane County Council yesterday. As a result of a full discussion it was decided to impose a speed restriction on the, bridge of 10 m.p.h.. Urging that something should be ' done to curb the speed of vehicles on the bridge, Cr W. Hunter said that if some transporters were not stopped now the bridge would not last much longer. Although there "was a new bridge under construction it would be about two years before it w&s completed. Mr C. H. Brebner, county engineer, agreed with Cr Hunter and said the piles supporting the bridge were not in a very good condition. The whole structure would have to "be nursed until the new bridge was ready for use. He suggested a 10 m.p.h. speed restriction. Other councillors agreed with the 'suggestion and it was also decided "that timber transported from south of Edgecumbe would have to go ever the Awakeri state highway. Notices are to be erected pointing out the need for care while using the bridge and the Rangitaiki Dairy Company is to be asked to request its drivers to cross at a low speed.
