All-Time Primary Production Record Despite Handicaps
It was wrong to say that primary production had decreased, said Mr F. P. Walsh, Chairman of the National Aid to Britain Council, addressing a meeting of the Auckland Province of Federated Farmers. Farmers were entitled to great credit because their shortages of machinery, housing and labour were very real. Notwithstanding these difficulties, however, production was actually an all-time record. Mr Walsh warned members that the only thing which could stabilise the country’s economy and avert a high degree of inflation was increased production not only by
farmers, but by all sections of the community. If costs of production overcame receipts, then the position would be very serious. It was hoped that practical propositions would be discussed and satisfactorily finalised, in order to develop Northland. Mr Walsh said he was confident of the support of the Government and' if plans materialised this would make an important step in the furtherance of primary industry in that area.
