BAY OF PLENTY STATION IYZ WILL OPEN ON APRIL 27
The new Bay of Plenty broadcasting station IYZ Rotorua, is to come on the air next month and will be opened officially at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27. From that time listeners in the Bay area should have a firstclass signal and what is more, programmes will be broadcast designed more especially for their listening. This information was released by the Minister of Broadcasting, Mr Jones, this week. “The temporary studio buildings are at Rotorua and the 10 k.w. transmitter is at Paengaroa, where the establishment, includes a 500foot steel mast. It is intended to make arrangements for IYZ programmes to include broadcasts from Tauranga. “As a coverage station, IYZ will broadcast programmes similar to those sent out by 2YZ Napier, 3YZ Greymouth and 4YZ Invercargill. 151 Honrs a Day “Although the station will be on the air for 15J hours a day, the New Zealand broadcasting service’s consumption of electricity will not be increased. -An equivalent saving will be made by operating other stations in the North Island with diesel plant.” The Minister concluded that the erection of the studio and transmitting station had been accompanied by using a building that had been prepared for war purposes. They had been sited in such a way that the permanent buildings could be erected as soon as the necessary permits were obtained. The building of the permanent edifices would not interrupt the activities of the station.
