PICNIC LOAF: Boz flour, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 4oz mixed fruit (currants, raisins, sultanas, chopped figs or dates), 4oz butter or cod fat, 4oz sugar, 4 tablespoons milk, 1 teaspoon mixed spice. Sieve the flour, baking powder and spice into a basin. Rub in the fat with the fingertips, then add the prepared fruit. Beat the egg with the milk and mix to a soft consistency which will drop from the spoon. Put the mixture into a greased loaf tin and bake in a moderate oven for 1£ hours. Turn out on to a cake rack and allow to cook. Pack whole and cut as required.
