BAY OF PLENTY TENNIS TITLE TO I. WYLDS

r Not altogether unexpectedly to those who have watched his form . this year, I. Wylds, of the Whakatane Lawn Tennis Club, won the Bay of Plenty singles tennis champion- ( ship on his home club’s courts at the week-end. In the final against R. Lees, Rangitaiki, yesterday, Wylds played superb tennis, to win in two straight sets against a widely experienced tournament payer who never seemed quite to get his opponent’s measure. Lees played a somewhat patchy first set, though producing some beautiful shots at times, with remarkable control on the backhand. Wylds volleyed perfectly and consistently out-drove the Rangitaiki man, who also had the weaker service. In the second set, Lees rallied well, apd consistently won his own service, keeping the gam? score level to 4-all when Wylds broke through to take the lead with a series of superbly placed shots to the left corner. The last game was hard, and ran to match point three times before a sizzling drive caught Lees hopelessly out of position. Playing with a beatifully free style, Miss W.. Larsen won the women’s title 4/6, 6/1, 6/4 in a hard final with Mrs Lee, both of Rotorua. Miss Larsen showed marked reluctance to go in to the net, and her opponent won the first set with the clever use of short spin shots, but later made the costly mistake of trying to slug it out on the backline younger opponent equipped with a strong drive from either angle.
