Whakatane Crews At N.Z. Champs
Rowing
Although not gaining any first placings at the New Zealand Rowing Championships held at Lake Karapiro on Saturday the Whakatane club competed creditably. Always well in the running, the local crews appeared to lack the polish, of some of the other clubs and could ; not always finish off with the same efforts. The most successful Whakatane crew was that which competed in, ‘ the Youths’ Fours. Eleven boats v faced theT starter and the race soon., developed into a duel between* Wanganui Union, who' came firsts Aramoho and Whakatane. At thefr finish these crews fought it out, with. Aramoho finally crossing the line to gain second place two feet ahead. of Whakatane. Almost immediatelyWhakatane entered the water again, for the Open Maiden Fours. Theyrowed a good race but the intervaL between the two events was too short and they could only come*a close 'fourth. This crew was stroked by P. Armstrong, with S. Shapley (3), ’M. Whittaker (2), W. Sandham (bow) and R. Reid (cox). Leaving their final sprint until a bit too late Whakatane could onlymake a close fifth in the Junior
Fours. This was a commendable* performance as the crew has onlybeen together for about three Weeks. N The crew was' G. Moore (stroke)*. E. Hunt (3), L. Stewart (2), G. Dines (bow).
Whakatane also competed in the* Lightweight Maiden Fours unplaced.
