Primary Roll Drops But The Secondary Has Large Increase
A drop in the primary roll of 17 but a rise in the secondary roll of 50 is shown in figures of the 1949 roll, supplied by the Whakatane District High School. At the end of last year the primary roll stood at 579 but dropped, when school reopened last week, to 562. This is not regarded as any indication of the true position ‘by school authoi’ities. “We expect this figure to rise,” said one teacher. “It is usually like this at the beginning of every year, but generally rises as the primers receive those who turn five as the year proceeds.” Compared with this the secondary roll jumped from 226 at the end of last December to 276 for the commencement of the new term. This is a fairly large figure, which has been affected probably, by the high leaving age.
