ARMING THE POLICE

Sir, —Surely when the average citizen reads with horror and indignation of the murder of the traffic officer at Whakatane he will agree that wfe must insist that our constables and traffic officers be armed. A readily-accessible gun should become part of their uniform. In spite of anything the powers-that-be try to tell us to the contrary it is obvious that, of late, there has been an increase in the number of dangerous types who need only the most trivial pretext or no pretext at all to take human life. It is no longer fair to expect the men whose duty it is to deal with this type to depend only on notebook and whistle or sirens and their own bravery. Finally, Sir, Auckland has a warm heart, and many of us I’m sure would like to express in tangible form our sympathy with the officer’s widow and child and a tribute to a gallant man who died doing his duty. I enclose a small contribution. Yours etc., “ACT NOW,” Milford, ’ Auckland.

A £1 note accompanied this letter, and is included in to'day’s list of acknowledgments.—Ed.
