Cathedral Rats
Although it is usually asserted that church mice—and, therefore church rats—are poor, grey rats which may be seen playing around the Christchurch Cathedral when the square is empty of all traffic in the early mornings appear to be well fed. They emerge near the main entrance of the Cathedral and gambol along the gravel paths or chase each other across the lawns. Their number varies from two to eight, and they seem to prefer mild weather for their frolics. One of the rats’ favourite tricks takes the form- of a follow-my-leader procession around the stone fence on theeast side of the Cathedral.
