Tightening Up Of Firearm Regulations Might Be Needed
Meeting on Thursday night the Council of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce set up a sub-commit-tee to study the existing regulations concerning the registration of firearms and the sale of ammunition. The sub-committee will report back to the Council, which will then take action, if it is considered necessary, to urge a tightening up in the interests of public safety. It seems that, under the present regulations, anyone can buy ammunition (other than .22) by giving name and address only, and .22 can be bought with less formality than is required for the purchase of a pound of butter or a gallon of petrol. The Chamber’s executive feels that, if such a regulation does not exist already, it should be made a rule that anyone purchasing ammunition must produce the registration certificate for the firearm in which he intends to use it.
