£IOB,OOO From Health Stamps More than 11 million stamps were sold in 2000 Post Offices in New Zealand during the 1948-49 health stamp campaign which ended recently. Although no detailed figures are available, it is known that sales totalled about £IOB,OO0 — a record.
M.P. Talks To Rotary Club The impressions gained while on his recent trip abroad was the subject of a talk by Mr W. Sullivan, M.P., to the Whakatane Rotary Club on Tuesday evening. Mr Sullivan traced the full routes he had covered, the countries he had visited and the people he had met.
Rainfall On Rangitaiki Plains During January 4.40 inches of rain was recorded to have fallen on the Rangitaiki Plains over a period of 14 days. The heaviest fall was on the tenth when 1.36 inches was recorded. The average for the month of January over the past 10 years is 4.309 inches. Sheep On The Move Many thousands of sheep have been moving on the rpads in the eastern Bay of Plenty in the past few weeks. Service cars and other transport services have been finding it hard to run to their usual timetables, while other traffic has also been delayed. Beach Cleanup ■ On Saturday week the Whskatane Beautifying Society will be ; holding a clean up of all logs and | washed up waste material on the j beach at the Heads, Whakatane. The fire brigade has agreed to burn all the waste when it is gathered. This clean up is being done in answer to requests by a number of people. The Borough Council, which might have done the work, is unable to do so through lack of staff. “Juke Box” Too Popular The owner of the “juke box” which has been installed in a Christchurch milk bar is finding the popularity of the machine something of an embarrassment to him. The Christchurch City Council had informed him, he said, that by causing crowds to congregate on the footpath outside the milk bar he was liable to prosecution. “I’ve got several other juke boxes,” he said, “but I'm a bit scared to instal them now.” Coins Appreciate South African five shilling pieces struck in 1947 to commemorate the Royal visit are now fetching prices several times their normal value. Up to 15s is being obtained from collectors in South Africa and overseas. In Britain and the United States, where there are more than 10,000,000 coin collectors, the pieces are realising as muqh as 30s each. Only 300,000 5s pieces were struck in 1947. They were specially intended for collectors and were bound ,to appreciate in value.
