New Sports Arena For Games
A new sports arena will be built in.Melbourne 4 if the city is awarded the Olympic Games of 1956. The site is the Royal Agricultural Society’s showground at Flemington, three miles from the centre of the city. Details of the plan will be placed before the International 1 ' Olympic Committee which meets an Rome in April. It provides for the erection of a modern stadium with seating accommodation for 70,000 people. Two * indoor swimming pools of Olympic standards with seating for 10,000 and 12,000 spectators and living accommodation for 4,000 athletes are also included in the plans. The Olympic proposals are combined with a twenty-year, plan drawn up by the Royal Agricultural Society to improve the already extensive facilities at the Melbourne showground. The State Premier, Mr Hollway, announced that if Melbourne is awarded the 1956 Games the Government will finance them.
