SCHOOLS OPEN ON TUESDAY: AMPLE BOOKS AVAILABLE

On Tuesday all schools in the Bay of Plenty will reopen, and hundreds of children will gather * to start another new year together. For some it will be in the same old familiar room; for others a t new room where they will commence harder work than that of the previous year, and for still another crowd it will be the beginning' of an almost new life.

The Whakatane District High School, as with the others .of the district, will commence on Tuesday. Figures of the opening role are not yet available but it is expected to have increased on last year’s. Stationery Available Stationers of Whakatane who supply school books report that there has been a steady. demand, but they have been able” to supply most of the books required. Although there is a shortage of paper, retailers have had about half of their orders filled by the manufacturers to the present. They expect them to be fulfilled within a week or two. Pencils, pens, rulers and other writing materials are not difficult to obtain. Clothing Very Short Clothing for school children however, presents a very different picture. Flannel shirts for boys are almost unobtainable and only light cottons can, at present, be purchased. Socks and jerseys are in very short supply,, although trousers, footwear and underclothing are available in a good supply. Boys’ clothing is very difficult to obtain and retailers yesterday said they could not tell ? when the position was likely to improve. For girls it is very much better. One draper said there was ample clothing for girls, the only short item being gym tunics, which are very scarce all over the country.
