The Land Rover: A Go-Anywhere, Do Anything Vehicle

J One of the first vehicles of its ! type to arrive in New Zealand, the Land Rover which arrived at MacLean Motors’ garage over the weekj end, attracted considerable interest ' here. Fresh from remarkable demonstrations. at Paeroa and Tau- ■ ranga, the little vehicle continued j its triumphant tour with a further J exhibition of its .prowess at Galatea ! yesterday, and will show its paces I again on Mr W. Emery’s property, Awakeri this afternoon.

i At Paeroa, on Mr Townshend’s Jersey stud farm, before about 80 farmers’, various tests were carried I out, 'those present being most imj pressed by the versatility when un- ! der heavy load. A six foot set of . tandem discs was employed under a full cut after an initial test of three inches and at this depth a reserve of power was still available. The oaddock was then levelled and this type of work presented no difficulties at all. Particular interest was aroused by the demonstration of | harrowing, this work being comi pleted very expeditously, affording . a great saving of time over the normal methods usually employed. I Activities were then transferred to the banks of the Paeroa River | where the stop . bank is, approximately 30 feet high, with a gradiant of one in three. The Land Rover accomplished this feat without any ! difficulty whatsoever. The adaptabili ity of the Land Rover was clearly j shown fin a test on the river bank in two feet of mud, several tests being employed, the vehicle never ; failing under the most strenuous j conditions. j A further test was conducted by Mr Kennedy of Pyes’ Pa, Tauranga. A hay paddock was selected with | undulating country and the farmers j present expressed v doubts as to whether the vehicle would accomplish the task. Their doubts were soon allayed as the Land Rover was able ; to keep six men stacking, and at times were unable to keep pace with : the hay brought in. The transfer I box was used on hilly sidings, enabling a treble load, which, in everybody’s opinion was far in adi vance of any other vehicle available. These demonstrations clearly showed the Land Rover to be an all purpose vehicle and a great money i saver, capable of replacing two and ■ three vehicles necessary under present farming conditions. ■
