Newly-Born Pigs Should Be Kept Warm From Birth
Newly-born pigs should be kept warm. About 25 per cent of all pigs born do not survive • for one month and probably the greatest predisposing cause of this loss "S exposure to cold. Directing attention to this heavy annual loss, a pig expert states that, although most of the deaths of pigs soon after bfrth are usually attributed to the sow lying on them, it is probable that over-laying would not occur so often if the young pigs were stronger and more able to escape the clumsy sow. As a safety zone for the youngsters, it is a good plan to fix boards about one foot above the floor across the back wall or corners of the pen. If plenty of straw is provided under these boards, the piglets can keep warm and safe when not out seeking refreshment from their mothers. A part of the boards should be hinged to form a lid for inspection and cleaning.
