An Actor Loses His Beard
The most distinguished beard in British films is no more—temporarily, at any rate. Scottish actor James Robertson Justice, whose flowing red beard has done much to win him recognition, had had the beard for 11 years. Then Ealing Studios cast him for the part of Petty Officer Evans in “Scott of the Antarctic”—a role requiring a beard for most of the action. But for the early scenes, P/O Evans has to be seen clean-shaven. Make-up man H. Wilton performed the operation, and Jimmy Justice saw his r6al face for the first time since 1937. He looked so different that he walked around Ealing Studios afterwards, being introduced to people who had been working with him—and was not recognised. Not In N.2. Yet
“Scott of the Antarctic” has not yet been released for screening in New Zealand.
