Much Variation In Size And Quality Of Concrete Posts
Advice of a scheme to establish a fixed price for the sale of concrete fencing posts throughout the Dominion has been received by the organising secretary of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand, Bay of Plenty Province in Tauranga, Mr E. J. Vosper, A witness who testified recently before the Royal Commission on the Sheep Industry on the prices of concrete posts, stated that he was informed there that prices as high as £42 per 100 posts are at present being charged. Such prices had not been authorised by the Price Tribunal, but, said the witness, he had pointed out to the Commission that, due to the variations in size, quality, and content of the posts manufactured it had not been possible to establish Dominion-wide prices for concrete posts. Due to the fact that the Division has no lists of persons manufacturing or selling such posts approvals given have been confined to cases where applications for approved prices have been made or specific complaints as to prices charged have been made. Mr Vosper has accordingly been requested to forward to the general secretary of the Federation in Wellington, information with regard to the names of firms in the Tauranga district engaged in the manufacture of concrete or wooden fencing posts and if possible to give an indication of the prices charged by them.
