Spear-Throwing Tribesman Breaks Javelin Record

This month at Kenya’s Colony Sports, Arap Kibiege, a Nandi tribesman, will be watched by thousands of Kenya sportsinen, African, European and Indian, when he takes part in the spear-throwing competition. Recently Kibiege, who normally spends his time guarding his cattle and hunting, attended the Rift Valley Provincial Sports meeting at Nakaru. Kibiege was extremely interested in the spear-throwing competition and asked if he might compete. Permission was granted. Kibiege stepped forward, almost casually raised his arm and threw his spear 238 feet exactly. This throw is 58ft. Sin. better than has ever been done before and 81 inches better than the British javelin record. Important point about Kibiege’s record throw is that his spear weighs between four and five pounds or more than twice the weight of the competition javeline used in A.A.A. matches.

The magnetic pole is 1500 miles south of the true north pole and approximately 97 degrees west longitude.
