Crickets Are Not A Menace In The Bay Of Plenty
Although crickets have long been a menace on the Hauraki Plains they have not been any trouble in the Bay of Plenty. Around Whakatane they are more the exception than the rule and are rarely found. Mr E. R. Marryatt, Fields Instructor for the Department of Agriculture at Whakatane, said that residents around the Eastern Bay of Plenty had little cause to be worried about crickets. Conditions here were not suitable for them and the concern for the farmer, at present, was not over this insect.
Conditions on the Hauraki Plains are particulaxdy suitable for crick ets where, in many cases, they ha ve completely ruined farms. It is only recently that intersectides have been found to be successful against them. They are gammexane and D.D.T. and it is expected that by using these the menace will become controllable.
