Prefab Houses For Indians

Twenty million Indians will be moved from their sandstone huts and shacks in the next few years into aluminium frame prefabs, designed in Slough, Buckinghamshire, manufactured in New Delhi, and set up throughout India. A' 12- year contract has been signed by the Indian Government and the Slough firm, S.M.D., Ltd., who will supervise the building of the houses in factories already under construction. A £150,000 factory—the first of many—being built at New Delhi will make 5,500 prefabs a year. Each house will cost £IBB to build on the site, and S.M.D. will receive royalties. f Two 9ft by 10ft living rooms, verandah and kitchen will make up the houses. Local materials—cement, sand, and plywood—will be used. Aluminium frames will be made in Britain. “We shall be sending technicians to India to supervise the erection of the factories and houses,” said an S.M.D. official.
