Portfolio In British Cabinet Suggested For Dominions Representative.

A suggestion that the British portfolio* of Secretary for the Dominions should be held by a representative of the Dominions has been made by the Chancellor of Melbourne University, Sir Charles Lowe. i

He said in Melbourne that the Dominions had drifted into imperfect liasion with Britain, and that there had been too few contacts between the Dominions and the Motherland.

Too much reliance had been placed on the A written dispatch, the coldness of which did not enable a close contact to be preserved and developed. Sir Charles was speaking at an annual dinner of the Overseas League He said that there would not be insularity of knowledge or interest if the staff of the Secretary for the Dominions was drawn from all the Dominions and from Britain. In this way there might come about a rotation of representatives of the Dominions and of Britain. Sir Charles added that it was many years since a Dominions Secretary had visited Australia.
