Should Wives Go To Sea?

Sailors will soon have to decide whether their wives should go to sea with them. • The Navigators’ and Engineers’ Union, who discussed at their Cardiff conference the right of wives ■to sail with senior officers, have appointed a committee of 20 to investigate the problem. A.referendum to all union members is likely. Chief advocate of the plan is First Officer James Buchan, of Glasgow, who told the union conference that this privilege would stop officers seeking shore jobs to have a decent married life, and it would make them eager to gain the privilege by promotion. The Seamen’s Union want a say. At least, ohe of their officials said: “The men should have their wives, too.”
