Natives To Have Own Air Taxi
New Guinea natives are to have an air taxi service between their jungle village and Wewak. Mr R. H. (“Bobby”) Gibbes, an ex-R.A.A.F. war ace, will operate p. taxi—a new Auster Autocrat. Mr Gibbes said that hundreds of New Guinea natives wanted air transport from their villages to the white man’s town. Gone were the days when they were content to travel to town by jungle trail or canoe. “Natives who can afford to pay cash for air taxi to bring them back to their jungle homes are regarded as being “very social” by their fellow men. “They call the aeroplane ‘the bird’ and regard hiring as owning a. plane during the flight.” The Auster’s slow landing speed makes it ideal for landings in' small clearings. ,
