Forest Fires Are A Danger
The State Fo'rest Service has appealed to the public to protect forests by exercising the greatest possible care with matches, cigarettes, and camp fires. Exotic forests now approaching large-scale utilisation were a very considerable national asset, said an officer of the service. Although indigenous forests were not at present of great economic value, they would be brought back under management provided fire could be kept out in the meantime. This applied particularly to beech forests.
The officer emphasised that it was an offence to leave any lighted match, pipe ashes, cigarette, or other burning substance where it might do harm.
