Use Of Plasticene In Berlin Air-Lift By Royal Air Force
Typical of the unusual problems which have arisen in the R.A.F. during the air-lift to Berlin is one recently solved by the personnel of a R.A.F. station in Britain. Dakotas returning to the station from Germany for servicing were found to have accumulated under the floorboards a considerable layer of coal dust and flour from their miscellaneous freight cargoes. Removing this layer was a task requiring many man-hours. Preventive measures had to be found quickly, and the difficulty was overcome with a typical touch of R.A.F. ingenuity. Joints in the floorboards were sealed with plasticene, about 261 b. being required to seal the floor of one Dakota. The treatment was completely effective and has now been adopted throughout Transport Command for aircraft carrying this type of cargo.
