Coming Of Age Party At Manawahe
Manawahe Hall presented a very gay and animated scene recently When friends frona Manawahe and all parts of the Whakatane district gathered to . celebrate -the coming-of-age of Miss Joyce Erskine. The hall, whieh had been decorated with streamers and balloons, provided colourful surroundings for a pleasant and enjoyable evening. ’* Guests were received by Miss Erskine, who was wearing am ivory taffeta and lace evening dress, and her mother, who looked well in black beaded silk. Under the capable stewardship of Mr Frank Malaquin, the fun . was soon under way, and there was not an idle moment during the whole party. The Rhythm Vendors provided the music for dancing, and as interludes, all present joined in several humorous and enjoyable games. A delicious home-made supper was served, after which Dr Appleby, acting as toastmaster, took charge. When the Loyal toast had been honoured the toastmaster took the opportunity of congratulating Miss Erskine on her engagement lo Mr Albert Porter of Dunedin. Miss Erskine replied with well chosen words, very enthusiastically received. „ Highlight of the evening was the lighting and the blowing out of the 21 candles on the double tier birthday cake which was a present to Miss Erskine from her mother. The cake having been cut in the approved manner, the geest of honour was presented with a large key, big enough to be autographed by ail friends present. Dancing and more games were the order of events until the evening concluded in the small hours. All who were fortunate enough to be present thoroughly enjoyed themselves and' were unanimous in their verdict that it had been a grand evening.
