Holiday Play At V Whakatane
A Three’s Tournament was held on the first Monday of the holidays, when greens were fast and in good order and many good games witnessed. Results:— Section A: Johnson, Stewart, (s) 5 wins, Martin, Bullot, Coates (s) 3-i, Breckon, George, Howat (s) 21, Sumner, Murphy, Oswald (s) 21, Compton, Head, Caisley (s) 2£ each, Duley, C. White, Burgess (s) Atkinson, O’Connor, Smoljan (s) 2 each. Section B: Harris, Copestake, Hayward (s), Rutherford, Morpeth, King (s) 4 wins each, Campbell, E. Bell, Howat (s), R. F. Smith, Cockerell, Butler (s) 3 wins each, J. Bell, Carling, Mclsaac (s) 1, Weeber, Cantrell, Sloane (s) 0. "" Semi-final: Hayward lost to King,: Berg a bye. • . ’ ' ’ */. Bay Of Plenty Centre Tournament
Teams from as far as Otorohanga, ■ Rotorua, Te Puke, Opotiki and Taneatua competed with the Whakatane Club in the annual competition for the Francis Cup. With a total of seven games on the card and a requirement of 5L_ wins to qualify for post section play, 19 teams started off on New Year’s day with high' hopes. With sticky greens after the heavy rainfall' on the previous day the going was tough and a number of crack teams suffered defeat. Play started off on Monday with light rain falling, making conditions again heavy, but, as the day advanced, conditions improved very much and by evening, with sic games played, the section winners were beginning to show but. The final game df section play yes- . terday saw several hopeful teams' Jail to qualify including last year’s winners. s -• Qualifying teams were:— Section A: Duley, Burgess, Me- • Car thy, Loane (s), J. Murphy, R. Wilson, W. Howart, Howat Jnr. Os), Pinker, Lawrence, Knight, Manning (s). ' .A Section B: Merito, Coates, Pearson, Smoljan (s), Ruthateford, Hollis, George, Sloane (s)., j / Post-section results: Loane beat Sloane 22—21; Manning beat Loane 11—9; Howat jr beat Smoljan 16—12. In a final that produced a splen- - did exhibition of bowling, Manning beat Howat' 21—17. Manning’s lead had a slight advantage over the Whakatane lead, and the. superb drawing shots by Te Puke’s No. 3, Owen Knight, were a feature of the game. On the last end the Te Puke-' lead had the advantage of one shot and though Wilson played a splen-. did second, Te Puke’s Nor- 2 went one better. The Whakatane skip’s final bowl failed to alter the head.
Progressive Pairs On Boxing Day
A full green competed for the Progressive Pairs Tourney. The two sections were won outright, P. Smoljan gaining the skips trophy for 5 straight wins, and J. Rutherford faring likewise for the leads trophy.
