BRIGHT CHILDREN’S PARTY AT OHOPE
Given by Mr F. Mahy senr and the Ohope Progress League, a bright children’s party at the Captain’s Cabin on Friday night was attended by over 200 adults and 120 children. Guests included the chairman of the School Committee, Mr D. Lovelock, and Mrs Lovelock; Mr Saunders, of the Education Department, and the Headmaster of the Whakatane District High School, Mr I. B. Hubbard. Mr J. H. Armstrong was M.C. for the evening, controlling the children with a jovial firmness that won their complete co-operation. Schoolteachers helped with organised dances and games. Mahy’s orchestra provided the music. Items by a team of dancing girls under the tutelage of Mr Gordon won hearty applause. During a suitable pause in the general gaiety, Mr 'F. G. Cutler, chairman of the Progress League* thanked Mr Mahy senior for his contribution to the cost of the function, Mr and Mrs G. Mahy for their contributions to the success of the evening, women of the Progress League for their work in connection with.it and Mrs Gordon for organising and training the dancing girls. Bouquets made by Mrs C. Allen were presented to Mesdames Herdman, Brebner, Anderson, Armstrong, Evington, Cutler, Murray, G. Mahy, as 'marks of thanks for special services. On behalf of the dancing troupe, Mr White presented bouquets to Mesdames. Gordon and Evington. Mr Mahy senior received a special bouquet on behalf of Mrs Mahy.
