MONDAY’S MOTOR CYCLING PROMISES MANY THRILLS
I The motor cycle race meeting I which is being promoted by the | Whakatane Carnival Committee, 4 in ! conjunction with the Bay of Plenty Motor Cycle Club, promises to be one of the best yet held. The Showgrounds track will be used and, given fine weather, Monday will see some fast and exciting racing. Among the visitors, there will be a party of six from Gisborne, including J. Benson and A. Sneddon, two champions of the £ mile grass track in that town. At a meeting held there three weeks ago, Benson turned on a thrilling exhibition and several experienced spectators reckoned him to be one of. the best rough riders in New Zealand. At the recent Opotiki . races he was very successful. 'The Opotiki Club will be sending their contingent ,and A. Swinton will be using a Velocette which is rumoured to have lots of speed. Of course Gavin Dunlop will be using his “Yellow Peril” on which he won two races in. Gisborne. This competitor is a great favourite with the crowd as he usually provides a couple of spectacular crashes during the day. It is not known as yet whether O’Brien, of Hamilton, will be a competitor with his special Douglas. This machine will be well remembered for its unusual take-offs at the Hillcrest Hill climb, and a grass track is capable of some great controlled slides, that have to be seen to be believed. The local club will be turning out in full force, although Jack Marsh will be saving his own machine for the N.Z. Tourist Trophy race at Waiheke on Year’s Day. However, it is said that he will be a competitor in several events. Frank Cameron, last Sunday, was competing at Hamilton where riders such as Perry, Holland and Dale were racing and finished fourth in the main event. His International Norton is going well and on Monday it should be really motoring. Arthuy Marsh will be using his Tiger Triumph oh which he won at Opotiki and Gisborne, so he too should turn on some, real speed. It is rumoured that a big Harley Davidson is being secretly tuned for this meeting. It has been said that this machine would hurry up Percy Coleman and his big Harley and there are many who are anxious to see whether this is correct, and will be in attendance especially for this.
