Stiff Breeze Mars Trial Fours 1

A stiff down river wind, along ‘ with jthe current of the outgoing tide made , rowing uncomfortable for members of the Whakatane Rowing Club in the trial fours 1 for the S. Armstrong Cup on Saturday. As a result times were very fast in the races but it took the boats a' considerable time to row upstream to the starting point. Rowing was of a particularly high standard with a noticeable-improve- ■ ment amongst first year rowers. Competition was keen in each race, the final providing an exciting, finish when G. Dines’ crew just mamaged to hold the fast finishing light weights, stroked by L. Stewart, and to go across the line 5 feet ahead. Results: — • ’

First heat: G. Dines, S. Shapley, D. Cropp, L. Goodall (T. Reid) beat P. Armstrong, M. Brown, D. McCarthy, C. Ranby (S. Lynds) by one length; second heat: R. Morpeth, E. Hunt, K. O’Rourke, S. Stubbs (R. Reid) beat G. Moore, G. Goodall, G. Drayson, R. Kin£ (T. Fenton) by three-quarters of a length; third heat: L. Stewart, M. , Brown, T. Stewart, Wells (T. Reid) beat M. Whittaker, E. Petty, W. Stuart, B. Burt (T. Dawson) lay 1|- • lengths; v semi-final: Dines’ crew beat Morpeth’s crew by three-quarters of a length; final: Dines’ crew beat L. Stewart’s crew by 5 feet.
