The Rare “Topper”
Nowadays a top hah is a rare enough sight to attract attention in any part of New Zealand, and to cause a mild sensation in a country town. Small wonder then that, instead of the usual “Good morning,” quite a common form of greeting on Whakatane on Tuesday was “Have you seen the bloke in the topper?”. Some even said there were two. However, the sad part of the story is that they wore dustcoats, so the locally fashion-con-scious had no chance to see what today’s well-dressed gentleman wears below the ceremonial tile.'
