MATATA MAORI WINS MOST POINTS IN SCHOOL SPORTS

: Many Spectators: Successful Meeting A highly successful inter-school . athletic meeting was held 1 on the Matata Gymkhana grounds on Sat- . urday, when competitors from seven primary schools competed for banners and trophies. The weather was ideal, and spectators from far and near attended in large numbers. Some very fine running and jumping was witnessed, especially in the junior section, and the inter-school team games and relay races provided plenty of thrills and excitement. An unfortunate accident occurred in the junior high jump when Graeme Bagley, of Edgecumbe School, broke an arm. /He was given first aid by a St John’s Ambulance official who was present, and later taken to hospital. Graeme’s performance on the day had been much admired, as, in spite of a physical handicap, he had earned points for his school in races, and when injured, had cleared 4ft 3ins in the high jump for juniors, in which he tied for first place. Had he not met with the accident he would have been in the running for the trophy given for the best all round boy athlete on the field. The most important and thrilling event of the day, at least for the many Maori spectators, was the action song contest for the Naumann Shield. The competing teams in colourful Maori costumes showed evidence of careful coaching and long hours of practice, and their splendid part singing and rhythmical action work were favourably commented on by the judge, the Rev. W. Rangi, and loudly applauded. It was unfortunate that some schools intending to compete in this event were unable to attend through various reasons, and it is hoped that next year 'a larger number of teams will, be competing.
