Thornton W.I. Farewells One Of It’s Members

The December meeting of the Thornton Women’s Institute was well attended, Mrs Ducker presiding. After the aspirations were read and business discussed, the meeting became more of a social afternoon to farewell Mrs F. Watts, who is leaving the district. Two items were given by the Glee Club. Mrs Robb presented two humorous recitations, dressed in a Scottish costume. Mesdames Craddock and Smith played a pianoforte duet. The roll call a Scotch joke, brought forth some amusing stories. A competition was won by Mrs Jones. Mrs Ducker then presented. Mrs Watts with a pretty bouquet of flowers and asked her to accept a gift from the Institute. She expressed regret of the departure of Mrs Watts. Mrs Arbuckle, on behalf of the staff of the Lands Department and residents of Thornton, then presented Mrs Watts with a handsome clock and a bouquet of flowers. She paid a tribute to Mrs Watts’ willing help in all local affairs. Mrs Watts replied. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Hyland, Heikell and McQueen. The competition winners were:— Flower: Mrs Robb I,' Mrs McQueen 2. Vegetable: Mrs Sheat 1, Mrs D. Branch 2. Xmas cake: Mrs C. Smith 1, Mrs L. 'Smith 2. Pea pods: Mrs L. Smith 1, Mrs Law 2. Nancy Watts won the prize in aid of general funds.
