The efforts of various organisations in the Bay of Plenty to have the Paeroa-Pokeno railway completed, is of particular interest tc Whakatane, in that there will be a big saving in time and freight rates between the Bay of Plenty and Auckland. (The Bay of Plenty Province of Federated Farmers has taken an interest, as it would be affected, and is giving support* for the work to be completed. The time for passenger trains, it is stated, between Paeroa and Auckland will be reduced by two hours. The saving in rates would be considerable as 'the reduced distance between Paeroa and Westfield well illustrates, in the following figures: Manures by 3s Id per ton (class E); stock foods 8s 5d per ton (class D); livestock 20s Id per truck; seeds and woolpacks 8s sd.per ton; machinery 9s 3d per ton; wool Is 4d per bale; timber lOd per 100 square feet.
