Trawler Towed To Whakatane With Engine Trouble
After it’s engine broke down, a trawler from Auckland drifted helplessly off Whakatane early on Monday evening and was eventually towed into the harbour by the Whakatane Harbour Board’s launch. The vessel had engine trouble just off Whale Island and after drifting for some time managed to make the bay off the Island, where it dropped anchor. Distress signals were then sent up and these were finally noticed just after dark, by Mr H. N. McDonald, Hillcrest, who notified the police. Constable R. F. Julian received the call and he got in touch with harbourmaster Captain G. Carey. Together with Messrs R. Campbell and N. McG. Bremner, they boarded the harbour board launch and proceeded to the island. When the trouble was discovered the launch towed the trawler back to the harbour. Fortunately the sea was calm and little difficulty was experienced in the towing. The vessels finally reached port at 11 o’clock after about half an hour’s tow. The trawler is the Kia Maia and is owned by the Kia Ora Fishing Company, Auckland.
