Navy Turns Green

Royal Navy ships are to be painted a pale greenish tinge. At* the turn of the century they had black hulls, a red waterline, white upperworks and yellow masts and funnels.

After three years’ research “battleship grey” became general in 1903. Advantages of the new paint are: It takes less linseed oil, the cost of which is prohibitive, and is more fire-resistant.
