ROD & GUN CLUB’S OPEN SHOOT DRAWS OVER 50 STARTERS
Despite the unpleasant weather conditions the Open Shoot held by the Whakatane County Rod and Gun Club at the week-end was. very successful, and the shooting was of a high standard. Over fifty competitors form all parts of the Bay of Plenty were present, as well as a number of interested spectators frdm the surrounding district. Feature event on the programme was the Bay of Plenty Teams Challenge Cup match in which teams from Opotiki, Rotorua, Tauranga, Te Puke and Whakatane (holders) took part. The Tauranga team shot vej-y well and had a comfortable win from Opotiki. The Whakatane Club Champion, W. Hume, won the big cash event of the day, but the visitors carried off the main trophy events. A very fine Cup presented by Mr J. Plamus for the Whakatane Club’s Open Championship was competed for by representatives from all Clubs present for the first time. At the conclusion of the shoot the president, Mr J. D. Rivett, presented the cups and trophies to the winners, and congratulated them on their excellent performances, the recipients suitably replying. Detailed results: — Eye-opener, 10 birds, sweepstake (54 entries): R. Knight, W. Costello, A. J. Brown (Rotorua), C. Hartley (Tauranga), C. Mitchell, A. Mitchell and R. Bluett (Whakatane) all shot the possible and divided the stake. £SO Open Handicap Match, 20 birds (35 entries): W. Hume (Whakatane) 20 birds 1; W. Costello, J. Watt, F. Lord (Rotorua), J. Plamus (Whakatane), C. Hartley (Tauranga) and J. Shove (Opotiki) 19 birds, equal, 2. Bay of Plenty Teams Challenge Cup (7 entries): Tauranga, 89, 1; Opotiki, 81, 2; Rotorua A, 78, 3; Whakatane* A, 75, 4; Whakatane B and Te Puke, 71, 5. Optional Sweepstake in conjunction with Teams Match: P. Jaeger (Tauranga), 15 birds, 1; J. Shove (Opotiki), 14 birds, 2. £25 Open Handicap Trophy Match, 15 birds (40 entries): J. McLeod (Tauranga) 1, C. Hartley (Tauranga) 2, W. Kenyon (Whakatane) 3. All three shot the possible and, in the shoot off the placings were as named above. This was a most exciting contest as McLeod shot 32 birds in succession before emerging as the winner. Plamus Cup, Open Club Championship, 15 birds (25 entries): J. Shove, C. Hartley, and A. Mitchell all shot 14 and the shoot-off resulted: Shove 1, Hartley 2. Quail Drive, 10 birds, sweepstake (13 entries): F. Lord 1.
