Too . Good To Miss * A country resident came into the Beacon office the other day and paid a year’s subscription in advance, explaining that he had not seen the paper for a few years and had not been a subscriber before. “But,# 1 he said, “somebody delivered one at my place by mistake the other da;jf. After reading it, I decided it was too good to miss!” James Street Improvements Nothing further is to be done to James Street in the meantime, it has been decided by the Whakatane Borough Council. Some residents have been agitating for ‘improvements to the street but the Council is not able to do anything yet because the work- is not on this year’s estimates. However, when the new estimates are drawn up for next year the Council has undertaken to give the James Street work every consideration. Sportsmanship? Sportsmanship exists even in flower shows —most times. But. apparently in the Whakatane Beautifying Society’s flower show on Friday it seemed a bit short in one, competitor. The judge had just finished judging the fruit. He had in the course of his inspection of the oranges cut in half one or two at random. After he passed to the next exhibit one of the entrants, apparently dissatisfied with the result, cut the other oranges up as an expression, probably, of disapproval. The only affect created, as one official put it, was to .spoil ,the wholaof the orange section.
