N.S.W. Tennis Stars Might Be Coming Here Next Year

There is a possibility that Whakatane might be visited by the New South Wales tennis team of four men which starts a tour of this country about February 5 of next year. Asked by the N.Z. Lawn Tennis Association for suggestions as to this district’s inclusion in the itin T ' erary, the executive of the Bay of Plenty L.T.A., meeting at Whakatane on Wednesday night, replied . suggesting that the visitors come to Whakatane if the date available were a week-end date, and to "Tauranga if it should be a week-day fixture.

A match for Bay of Plenty representatives has been arranged with Thames Valley for February 12, and a match with Waikato is to be arranged. It was agreed, following discussion on a suggestion that a Reid Cup challenge be played at Gisbornfe, that the rules be adhered to and matches played on the holders’ grounds, Bay of Plenty being the holders. This season starting time of all matches played under this Association’s jurisdiction will be 10.30 a.m. A grant of £5 was made to the Opotiki District High School for balls for the school championships. Result of the postal vote on ball adoption was that the Association decided to adopt no specified ball. New competitions to be inaugurated this year are a C grade interclub competition for teams of six men and four women, best of 21 games to win; also a senior and junior residential tournament. Matatua Tennis Club, Ruatahuna, applied for affiliation, but the application had to be declined because Ruatahuna is outside the Association’s boundary. The president, Mr P- R. Bryers, was in the chair, and the meeting was attended by the following delegates: Messrs T. O’Grady and T. Solley, Rotorua; R. Dickison and N. Spratt, Tauranga; E. Wilson and C. Oliver, Whakatane; Miss I. Grover and Mr O. F. Woolfield, Opotiki. Also present were Messrs A. F. McBride, Tauranga; F. Wolsey and Richardson, Pongakawa; F. Pritchard, vice-president, and T. Hall, acting-secretary.
