Artificial Fingers That Work

Undergoing tests in England is an artificial hand, with four fing- . ers and a thumb, which will pick up objects of any shape. The hand runs into a- hollow wrist which fits over the stump of the amputated arm. A cord runs up the arm and across to the opposite shoulder. A y shrug of the shoulder tugs the string which works a.system of levers inside* the hand. These levers make the fingers close. A big point is that the thumb and each finger will all move independently, closing until each meets the surface of the-object. This means that the fingertips will conform to irregular surfaces, such as goblets and electric light globes. As soon as the fingers close on an object they lock. The hand can therefore lift things up, but the wearer must unlock the hand by - tripping a catch on it with his real hand.

Six hands are being tried out by returned soldiers, chosen by the Ministry of Pensions, which will get doctors’ and wearers’ reports.
