Artificial Heart And Lung For Dog
An artificial heart and lung have been used t© keep a dog alive for 35 minutes during an operation on the dog’s heart. A famous Swedish heart specialist, Professor Crafoord, performed the operation. The apparatus used to keep the dog alive is described in this month’s issue of the medical journal, the Laricet'; ' —~ The article explains that, in the human body, circulation can be cut off from the neck down for about half an hour without ill effects. v The brain, however, ■ suffers serious damage if its bipod supply is cut off for more than 10 minutes. The apparatus used by Professor Crafoord maintained a flow of blood to the dog’s brain during the operation, and fed a supply of oxygen into the blood. „ The dog made a complete recovery.
