Why The New Milk Bottles Are Brown
Should milk bottles be brown or white? Most people would rather have white, judging by comments on the new brown bottles. The manufacturers have had to make broivn bottles, because they have been short of the .soda ash needed for making white glass. Milk suppliers have long known that their customers preferred white bottles to brown—unlike brewers’ customers. People are rightly careful about the cleanliness of milk, and a clear white glass bbviously shows any trace of dirt inside the bottle better than brown glass. Has a brown bottle any advantage over a white one? It protects the milk from the chemically active rays in sunlight, which break down the vitamins. Clear white glass is not so in keeping out the ultra-violet and other actinic rays. But whether the bottles are brown or white, you are wise to keep your milk out of the sunlight.
