Deaconess Gunning For Shakespeare 's Ghost In Hereafter
Exception to a line from Shakespeare was taken by Sister Rita Snowden, a well known writer and deaconess, in an address to the League of Mothers annual meeting held recenly at Auckland. The line in question was:,“Frailty, thy name is woman.” While many men would probably agree wholeheartedly with William Shakespeare few women would. Least of all Miss, Snowden. If she met Shakespeare in the “hereafter” Miss Snowden declare ed, she would pick a quarrel with him. If the two did meet it is likely that Shakespeare would find out from practical experience whether there was any truth in his assertion. Miss Snowden went on to prove how untrue was the line. She quoted instances of courage and sacrifices made by women. It is possible that 'Shakespeare underestimated ' the gentler sex. But as one man (married) put it, “The line reads well, anyway.”
