Beach Improvements: Special Rating Area Mooted For Ohope

There is a move afoot to call a meeting of Ohope ratepayers next Wednesday to consider a proposition for forming a special rating area to cover beach properties from the Hostel to the Eastern end of the beach. It would then be possible, by means of a special rate, to put in kerbing and channelling and a proper stormwater drainage system. It has previously been explained by the Whakatane County Council that the special rate is the only fair means of carrying out improvements of that nature. It is quite obvious that ordinary riding funds could not be* expected to stand the cost.

However, the. Council has made it. clear in the past that its full cooperation will be available whenever the ratepayers express their willingness to assume responsibility for the cost of works that are not covered by ordinary road maintenance.
