RESTRICTIONS ON FOOD

Sir, —The Food and Production Committee of the Christchurch (N.Z.) branch of the National Council of Women is very much alive to the unreasonable restrictions on/and destruction ,of wholesome food; and are asking some very pertinent questions'. They say: “We are horrified at the wilful destruction of God’s gifts, and fail to understand why protest has been so small.” They strongly object to every encouragement being given to luxury pursuits, such as luxury meals, the liquor trade, horse racing, gambling and other kinds of waste—while people starve. Is it any wonder they protest? Observe the destruction of fowls, when the people need and want, fresh eggs—not pulp or powdered rubbish. We need health, and this can be obtained’' only from fresh food. And note the wholesale destruction of potatoes within the last few weeks, under Government control. Destruction of good food when paid for, reacts on the consumer. Under sabotage of distribution, production becomes a woeful want. Production has never exceeded*, demand, and n'ever will; except under dictatorship (centralised control of production, distribution and exchange). Women of Whakatane, have you a branch of the National Council of Women? If not, why not? Yours etc., W. BRADSHAW.
