Local Racing Club To Re-Form
KEEN, MEETINGS Following a very enthusiastic meeting recently held in the Reception Hall at Edgecumbe when 75 supporters attended a public meeting for the purpose of reforming the local Racing Club another meeting was held, and although the weather was inclement, 50 members again attended. The original meeting had been called by Mr J. Moody, secretary, and Mr W. H. Semmens, president of the Club, which had gone into recess in 1934. The same gentlemen were again in control and at the second meeting and reported steps they had taken since the first meeting. - Correspondence from the New Zealand Racing Conference indicated that the new club would have to elect an executive and adopt a set of rules and then apply for registration. There were several other qualifications, but there seemed no reason why the registration of the club should not be effected. A letter from the Te Teko Domain Board was received, giving permission to use the course on the Domgin. Mr Semmens stated that a steward of the Racing Conference after inspection had reported favourably on the course. On the motion of Mr G. Otley, seconded by Mr G. Fogerty, it was decided to appoint the following officers of the club:— A Patron, a President, two VicePresidents, a Committee of seven and a Secretary or Secretary-Trea-surer. The following officers were then electde:— Patron, Mr W. Sullivan, M.P.;) president, Mr D. Radcliffe (at this stage Mr Radcliffe took the chair); vice-presidents, Messrs W. J. Sullivan and C. Eivers; committee, Messrs D. G. Fogerty, G. Otley, J. Moody, D. McDonald, G. T. Lodge, R. T. Morpeth, J. E. Black; secretary, Mr H. Morgan. It was decided to leave the appointment of stewards to the incoming committee. Mr Radcliffe moved that the committee draw up a set of Club Rules and report back to a general meeting of members for their confirmation. On the motion of Mr Macken it was agreed that the committee take steps to make application ■ for a totalisator permit at the earliest possible moment. Membership of the club was fixed at £1 Is and members totalling approximately 100 were enrolled, being representative of Whakatane, Taneatua, Opotiki, Edgecumbe, Te Teko, Awakeri, Thornton, Matata and Manawahe. The meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to Mr W. H. Semmens (retiring president) for the many years of excellent service he had rendered to the club.
