Nylon Carpets Are Latest Thing In Floor Coverings
Nylon stockings are no longer news, but nylon carpets are in thp category of “things to come” as far as New Zealand is concerned, and when the dollar crisis has passed no doubt there will be displays of these carpets which are the newest in floor coverings. The first nylon carpet in the U.S. has just stood up to a year’s wear on a hotel floor, and' today looks as if it has just rolled newly woven off its loom. Based on a new concept of Weaving “Splendants”—which is'the very appropriate name bestowed upon this newcomer in the floor-covering field—brings out dramatic contrasts through its sculptured surface, though made of only a single colour. This bas-relief effect is obtained through the weaving, however, not through cutting of any kind./Done in a handsome scroll pattern reminiscent of some of the fine handwoven Chinese rugs, the nylon carpet, of Wilton construction with five{Hy cotton back, appears practically impervious to dirt, although it comes in such soft colours as beige, grey, and pastel green. On this particular nylon carpet, engineers spent eight years in research and in perfecting the type of weave and designing special looms which finally produced this modern nylon rug. Those who purchase these new nylon carpets will find them registered in their name, in much the same manner in which precious limited editions of a rare book or etching are recorded. Each owner receives a parchment' certificate, inscribed with his name and recorded number. , Each scroll is signed by. the president of th 4 e company and entitles the owner to return the carpet to the manufacturer for its first official shampooing.
