N.Z. REGULAR ARMY IS NOW TAKING CADETS

The Army is now accepting applications for the second draft of Regular Force Cadets, who will enter the Army School of Instruction, Trentham, in January next year. As for the first draft, which entered camp in July, the number of cadetships, offered is approximately 90. More than half of these will go to boys who enlist for an eightyear term of training, as apprentices, in one of the many skilled Army trades. The remainder will go to boys who enlist for a five-year term for training as specialists or as instructors in Corps such as Artillery, Armour, Engineers, Signals or Infantry. Applications will close on November 1 and the cadets finally selected Will enter Trentham Military Camp on January 18 and 19. As well as being taught a trade, or learning to be Army Instructors, the Cadets will, have an opportunity to continue their formal education. All will receive instruction from trained graduate \ teachers in English, mathematics, social studies and a science or technical subject useful in their trades. They will be encouraged to sit for outside examsuch as School Certificate and University Entrance and where it is in the interest of a Cadet that he should sit in subjects not taught in the Army, correspondence courses will be arranged and supervised by the teaching staff. Trade trainees will be encouraged to gain civilian trade qualification such as the Certified Mechanics’ and “A” Grade Mechanics’ Certificates. Cadets who show special promise and" who qualify, or who have qualified, for University Entrance, will be encouraged to do University work with a view to their admission to the Royal Military College, Duntroon. as service entry staffcadets. The cadetships .are offered to boys of 16 and 17 and preference is given to applicants who have had at least two years’ post-primary schooling.
