London Magistrate Does "Time" To Find Did What It's Like
A London magistrate is going to goal. He is “sentencing” himself to 14 days without the option of a fine. None of his fellow “lags” will know his identity. The magistrate will wear prison clothes, share a cell and eat the same food as other prisoners. Only the governor knows his secret. To other prison officials he will be “just another name and number.” But no mark will appear against this magistrate’s character, for he has committed no crime. What he has done is to make an arrangement with the governor of a prison to admit him as'an inmate. He' wants to find out for himself how prisoners live. Magistrates have been urged to make a closer inspection of prisons, Borstal institutions and approved schools. The Home Secretary wants them to be better qualified under the new Criminal Justice Act. This London magistrate has begun his studies the hard way. He is a heaVy smoker. For a fortnight he will go without tobacco. But he will pay for his own maintenance, 14/- a week.
